FPU Participates in Hazmat Training Drill

On Monday, October 29th, Fayetteville Public Utilities (FPU) participated in a

hazmat training drill alongside members of state and local emergency management

agencies, city and county fire departments, as well as city and county law enforcement. The

drill started around 9:30 a.m. at FPU’s Water Treatment Plant on Eldad Rd.

Over the next several hours the agencies focused on the response if a chlorine leak were to

occur at FPU’s chlorine building. The training scenario took place as if it were an actual


After a safety brief, the training drill started with Water Treatment Plant Supervisor, David

Posey, making a call to 911, alerting the dispatchers they were calling about an exercise and

that he had two men down. The team went through the exercise as if they were evacuating

surrounding homes and businesses. Southern Manor Assisted Living also participated in the

drill following their procedures at their facility. Responders then repaired the simulated

chlorine leak and secured the area.

“We are making sure that everyone, from FPU employees to responders and community

members, know how to handle this type of situation should it arise,” says FPU CEO and
