Mary Lynn Byrom of Fayetteville High School and Tate Stevenson of Lincoln County High School were selected to attend the 2017 Youth Leadership Summit sponsored by the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association, Fayetteville Public Utilities and other Tennessee electric cooperatives. The Summit will be held March 13-15 in Nashville, TN, at the Maxwell House Millennium Hotel.
Each year, two junior class students (one boy and one girl) are chosen from each participating electric system’s service area to participate in the Youth Leadership Summit. Student applications are submitted to FPU from each local high school. Byrom and Stevenson were selected based on their accomplishments and leadership roles which also include mentoring or tutoring other students, school organizations/activities, church activities and participation in community events.
“We want these young leaders to share our commitment of being a leader in our community,” says FPU’s CEO and General Manager Britt Dye. “We are proud to be a part of a leadership enhancement program such as the Youth Leadership Summit which offers the team-building, problem-solving and leadership building blocks to help prepare students like Mary Lynn and Tate for the opportunities that are ahead.”
This two and one-half day seminar educates young leaders about our state government and hometown electric cooperatives and rural electric systems, enhances leadership abilities and gives them an opportunity to meet our state legislators on Capitol Hill. Other highlights include a tour of the State Capitol and an opportunity to listen in on House and Senate Committee meetings at Legislative Plaza. The group will spend an afternoon at the Nashville YMCA learning teamwork and problem-solving while also enhancing their leadership skills through team activities.
While at the Summit, Byrom and Stevenson will also learn from electric system employees the importance of having a hometown, locally-owned and -operated electric utility in their community.
Byrom is the daughter of Troy and Becky Taylor; Stevenson is the son of Tommy and Tammy Stevenson, all of Fayetteville.
