FPU's telecom rates increase July 1

Fayetteville Public Utilities (FPU) has announced rate increases for our cable television and high-speed Internet services effective July 1, 2015. This rate increase is a result of increasing costs of cable programming from the networks and the costs associated with continuing to upgrade Internet bandwidth.

Among programming cost increases, Nashville channels 2, 4 and 5 have increased a total of 118.75% while Huntsville channels 19, 31 and 48 have increased a total of 109.52%. Also, Huntsville Channel 54 increased 105%. Total programming costs, including all other channels, have increased 25.09% in the past year, but FPU has chosen to absorb most of the costs. Those packages affected by the July 1 rate increase include Budget Basic, Basic Plus, Digital Basic, Digital and High-Definition programming packages. Customers will also see an increase in HBO and HBO-Max premium channels.

FPU telecom customers will see a $0.50 per month increase on equipment rental charges such as digital video recording and high-definition boxes, digital converters with remotes, and cable modems and a $1.00 increase per month on inside wire maintenance.

Before we pass any rate increase along to our customers, we look at every feasible option we have to cut costs internally without affecting service quality. With this practice, we have been able to reduce the amount of the total increase so that our customers will not receive the full amount of the increase from the cable networks.

All cable modem Internet customers will see a rate increase of $2.00 per month. Along with the rate increase, the 13 and 15 megabyte customers will also see an increase in download speeds of 2 megabytes. The 17 megabyte customers will see an increase in download speed of 3 megabytes.

While digital phone customers will not see a rate increase, FPU will begin passing through to our customers a Federal Universal Service Fund charge. This charge is administered by Universal Service Administrative Company.

You will find enclosed a copy of our telecommunications rate sheet detailing our rates effective on July 1, 2015. If you have any questions about the new rates, please call our customer service department at (931) 433-1522.
